He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Psalm 107:20
True Hope: Blessed Hope
Christ is our hope
Text: Titus 2:13 IBCSS June 25, 2006
By Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
“Blessed Hope” is a God-given hope to those people who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. No unbeliever could have this kind of hope except he repents from his sins and by faith receives the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
The phrase “Blessed Hope” could be well-understood by studying the Word of God carefully and prayerfully. In Titus 2:13-14, it is written, Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (KJV) Blessed hope is always associated with believers’ pleasurable expectation of the glorious appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ. The object of true faith is the Lord Jesus Christ and beyond doubt, He is the great God mentioned in verse 13.
The Lord Jesus Christ is our hope and His awaited coming will surely vindicate our “Blessed Hope”. What a blessed moment that will be when Jesus comes and claims His saints to take them to the prepared place He promised during His earthly ministry.
As we go through our study of what “Blessed Hope” really means, we could use the same letters of the phrase to make us realize its significance. First, the word “Blessed” reminds us that Christians are extremely blest by the Lord by giving them: Believers’ hope, Life-energizing hope, Exceeding abundant grace of God, Sanctifying hope, Salvation-related hope, Eternal blessings and Delightful hope. What an unbelievable assurance from God to every wicked sinner saved by grace through faith in Christ. What a blessing for a blood-bought and blood-washed man through the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Secondly, we could also use the letters of the word “Hope” to make us aware of the wonderful contents of our “Blessed Hope.” As the Holy Spirit reminds us of our treasures in Christ, may we give the due praises and glory to God.
Heaven-related Blessings I Peter 1:3-5
In this present world, and beyond this earthly life, we firmly believe that Christians are the most blessed people. They have the best of life now, and surely, the best of eternity. In I Peter 1:3-5, it is written, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (KJV)
Overwhelming Meeting With The Lord I Thes. 4:16-17
What a blessed moment when we see Jesus our Savior face to face and have a joyful meeting in the air. In I Thessalonians 4:16-18, the Bible says, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” (KJV) What a blessed hope we have in Jesus! May we be not found selfish concerning our hope, but share also to others the blessings of trusting the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation. Truly, Jesus saves!
Peculiar People’s Citizenship John 14:1- 3
The Bible says in Titus 2:13, “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” (KJV) The word peculiar means special, beyond usual. And what makes a Christian peculiar? Well, because he is redeemed from all iniquity, cleansed, zealous of good works, and above all, he is Christ’s.
Another interesting fact about Christians is their citizenship in Heaven. In Philippians 3:20-21, it is written, For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. (KJV) As we go through our life’s journey, may true Christians be truly identified as peculiar by the way they think, talk, act and their attitude toward the glorious appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Eternal Life, Love, Peace And Joy Titus 3:7 John 3:16
Countless people look for hope and the world deceitfully offers them false hope. It is certain that the world cannot afford to give true hope because the only way to have it is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Only Jesus can give true hope to human race. Without Christ, there is no hope.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Truth and the giver of eternal life, love, peace and joy. Beyond doubt, a man in Christ will surely enjoy these well-desired contents of the “Blessed Hope”.
The unsaved world may not be convinced of what Christians are saying concerning blessed hope, but through our changed life they behold day by day, they will be led gently to the saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In I John 3:2, it is written, Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (KJV)
A truly saved person has blessed hope. His hope is far beyond what others have in mind. It’s not like a child hoping to become a doctor someday or a poor man hoping that someday he will become rich. It’s not merely an ephemeral success and physical survival.
Blessed hope has a sanctifying effect in the believer’s life. The Bible says, “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” Through this hope, a believer is extremely blest. The moment an unbeliever sees this happens to a believer’s life, it will be easier for him to be led to the Lord Jesus Christ. He will repent from his sins, and by faith, he will receive Jesus in his heart as his Lord and Savior. Consequently, he will be saved and have that “Blessed Hope.”
To those who still have no hope, now is the time to come to the Lord Jesus and be blest. To Christians, keep on shining for Christ and be a consistent guiding light to the lost so they may find their way to the only Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Be a blessing to others.
